Management Team


Greg McCunn , Director and CEO

Greg McCunn has over 25 years’ experience in the mining industry. On April 1, 2019 he was appointed Director and CEO of Asanko. Most recently he was CEO of Alio Gold, a junior gold mining company with operations in Mexico and Nevada. Prior to joining Alio Gold, Greg was CFO at Asanko from 2011 to 2017, during which time the Company financed the construction of the Asanko Gold Mine, executed the first phase of construction, completed commissioning and achieved commercial production. Greg was also CFO for Farallon Mining until it was sold to Nyrstar in early 2011. Mr. McCunn’s background includes technical, operational and corporate development roles with Teck Resources, Placer Dome and junior mining companies in Canada and Australia. He is a Professional Engineer and holds a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering and a Master’s degree in Business Administration.


Peter Breese , Director, President and COO

Mr Breese has over 30 years of experience in the global mining industry with a strong track record of successful project development and operations management. In November 2012, he joined Asanko as President and CEO and on April 1, 2019, will transition to President and COO, with responsibility for the operations of the Asanko Gold Mine and oversight of the large-scale Esaase development program. During his career, Peter has held a number of executive positions, including CEO of ASX-listed Mantra Resources, that was acquired in 2011 by ARMZ, part of the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation, Chief Executive of Norilsk International, following its acquisition of TSX/LSE listed LionOre Mining in 2007, where he was COO, as well as senior management & Board positions with Impala Platinum, Mimosa Mining Company and Zimasco, the largest chrome producer in Zimbabwe.


Charles Amoah , Executive General Manager, the Asanko Gold Mine

Mr Amoah is a Ghanaian national and a metallurgist with over 22 years of experience. He was promoted to General Manager, Asanko Gold Mine in early 2015, prior to this he was Manager - Processing. He has held a number of senior management positions in the Ghanaian gold mining industry, including General Manager of PMI Gold Corporation’s Obotan Project, as well as Acting General Manager and Metallurgical Manager of the Damang Mine, which is 90% owned by Goldfields. He holds a Certificate in Management Development and a Master’s degree in mineral processing.

Frederick Attakumah , SVP Corporate Affairs & Sustainability

Mr Attakumah has over twenty years experience in the mining industry spanning operations, project management and sustainability. He was a former Managing Director of AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi Mine and held various executive roles including General Manager for Engineering Services (Obuasi Mine) as well as Vice President of Sustainability for AngloGold Ashanti’s operations in Ghana. He has served as a First Vice President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines and was also a member of the Governing Council of the Private Enterprise Federation of Ghana. Fred holds an Honours Bachelor degree in Electrical and Electronic engineering as well as a Masters degree in Business Administration.

Mike Begg , SVP Mineral Resources

Mr Begg has over 25 years of experience in the African resources sector. He has extensive experience as a geologist in mining and exploration, having been involved in greenfields and mine site exploration. During his career he has held a number of management positions, including Chief Geologist, Technical Services Manager, General Manager and Operations Director. Mike brings extensive technical and managerial experience to Asanko Gold. He holds a BSc degree in Geochemistry and Geology and an Honours degree in Economic Geology.

Russell Bradford , SVP Metallurgy

Mr Bradford has over 25 years of experience in the mining industry across Africa, Europe and Australia. A qualified metallurgist, his expertise is in gold, uranium and base metals. He has held a number of senior management positions at Mantra Resources, LionOre International and BCL.

Frans de Bruyn , SVP Organizational Capability and SHE

Dr. de Bruyn has extensive human resources and organizational development experience. He has held senior managerial positions in South Africa and Australia with a number of mining and mining services companies, including Anglo American, Rio Tinto and Snowden. During the past 20 years, Frans has focused on business readiness and capability development and worked as a consultant with Asanko, Mantra Resources, LionOre Mining, Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton, BCL, Mimosa Mining Company and Zimasco. He holds a Doctorate in Psychology.

Fausto Di Trapani , EVP & Chief Financial Officer

Mr. Di Trapani, a Chartered Accountant, joined Asanko in 2012 as Executive: Finance and has played a major role in the transformation of the Company’s Finance function from late stage exploration through project development and production to the multi-jurisdictional fully integrated function it is today. This has included the deployment of a group wide ERP system to improve forecasting and budgetary controls, securing the Red Kite project finance facility and leading the Company’s procurement processes to bring the Asanko Gold Mine into production on time and under budget. During his 18 year career, Fausto has held a number of senior financial management roles at significant listed resource companies including Mantra Resources, Norilsk Nickel International and BHP Billiton. He holds an Honours Bachelor of Accounting Sciences degree.

Rob Slater , EVP Strategy

Mr Sherwen-Slater has over 20 years of mining operational, project management experience and executive experience in Africa and Australia. Most recently Rob was Group Executive Mining for Coffey International based in Australia. Prior to that he was Operations Director Australia for Norilsk Nickel, Projects Director for LionOre Mining and Chief Mining Engineer for JCI Projects. In addition to these corporate roles, Rob has had significant experience as a professional mining consultant in numerous parts of the world.

Hugo Truter , SVP Projects & Engineering

Mr. Truter is a mechanical engineer and holds a bachelor of commerce degree in management. He has over 25 years experience of project and operational management in Africa and has worked in the gold, base metals, platinum and diamond sectors. Most recently he was Manager, Engineering for Mantra Resources’ Mkuju River Project in Tanzania before its acquisition by ARMZ, the wholly owned subsidiary of the Russian State Corporation for Nuclear Energy. Prior to this, Hugo held a number of senior roles at Tati Nickel in Botswana, one of LionOre Mining’s major mining operations, including Head of Engineering, Project Manager of the DMS plant, one of the world’s largest and acted as General Manager of Tati for two years.

Josephat Zvaipa , EVP and Managing Director (Ghana)

Mr. Zvaipa has over 25 years of experience in Operations, Human Resources, Training and Development. During his career, he has been Operations Executive at Zimasco in Zimbabwe, one of Africa’s largest integrated ferrochrome producer, Head of Training and Development at the Hwange Colliery, Zimbabwe’s largest coal producer and Head of HR at LionOre Mining’s Africa division, until its acquisition by Norilsk Nickel. Most recently Joe was Head of Organizational Capability at Asanko.
